How our self defence classes work

Every self defence class follows the same proven pattern: learn a technique, drill it with a partner, then test it under gradually rising pressure. Over weeks and months, Collingwood students find the skills become reflexes, which is what you need when something happens suddenly.

The dojo is about six kilometres north of Collingwood, with parking at the door and seven adult classes a week.

Situations from inner-city life

We train responses to the situations Collingwood students describe: someone grabbing you outside a bar on Smith St, an aggressive person on a crowded tram, being followed from Victoria Park station, or a threat in a stairwell. Each scenario starts with awareness and leaving early, then moves to physical skills if they’re needed.

For women, teens and kids

Women train in our regular adult classes; see women’s self defence. Teens train in Junior Adults, and younger kids in Ninja Stars and Samurai Warriors. More on kids self defence.

Knife Defence

Adults spend one month in every four on Knife Defence: controlling the weapon arm, creating distance and escaping, practised safely with training knives. Read about our Knife Defence training.

Small skills that make a big difference

Self defence isn’t only about fighting. Collingwood students learn to scan a tram before they sit down, keep their phone away when walking alone, choose a well-lit route home from Smith St and use their voice to draw attention. These small habits prevent most problems before they start, and we practise them alongside the physical skills.

As someone totally new to martial arts, I’ve felt nothing but welcomed … as a short, small framed woman, it gives me some sense of empowerment I’ve never had before. Recommend for girls/ women of any age, and any experience.
