No-Gi Jiu Jitsu in Thornbury
No-Gi Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is BJJ trained in a rash guard and shorts instead of the traditional gi. Our No-Gi class runs every Wednesday at 7:15pm at our full-time dojo at 272 Dundas St, Thornbury, close to Preston, Northcote and Reservoir. Classes are 90 minutes and open to students aged 16 and over, including complete beginners.
What Makes No-Gi Different?
Without a jacket to grab, you control your partner with your arms, legs and body position. There's less friction, so the game is faster and more dynamic, with more scrambles and more movement.
- Faster and more athletic: fewer grips means quicker transitions and plenty of movement.
- Closer to everyday grappling: it's closer to wrestling and to grappling in normal clothes.
- Body control: underhooks, overhooks, wrist control and head control replace collar and sleeve grips.
- Wrestling-style takedowns: techniques that suit the no-gi game.
What You'll Learn in No-Gi Classes
- Positions and control: guard, mount, side control and back control without gi grips.
- Submissions: chokes and joint locks, taught step by step with safety first.
- Escapes: how to get out from underneath a bigger, stronger person.
- Takedowns and stand-up: getting the fight to the ground on your terms.
- Drilling and rolling: repetition with a partner, then controlled sparring (rolling).
What to Wear
No-Gi is trained in a rash guard (a fitted training top) and shorts. Please bring your own rash guard and shorts. Fitted clothing is best because it won't catch fingers or toes when you roll.
Your First Few Weeks
Beginners spar very lightly for the first few weeks, and spend time watching the higher ranks and how they conduct themselves in class. You roll more as your skills and confidence grow.
Your Instructor: Daniel Bacon
Daniel Bacon is a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, which he has trained in Melbourne since 2010, and a 5th Dan Black Belt in Japanese Jujutsu. In BJJ, Daniel trains under Ninos Dammo, head instructor of Australian Elite Team. His focus is a well-rounded game in both Gi and No-Gi, and he has medalled at Grappling Industries, the Pan Pacific Championships and the Victorian State Championships.

No-Gi BJJ: common questions
What is No-Gi BJJ?
No-Gi BJJ is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu trained in a rash guard and shorts instead of a gi. Without jacket grips it is faster and more dynamic, and closer to wrestling.
When is your No-Gi class?
Wednesday at 7:15pm. Each class is 90 minutes. Our Monday and Saturday classes are Gi.
What do I wear to No-Gi?
Bring your own rash guard and shorts. Fitted clothing is best because it won't catch fingers or toes.
Is No-Gi good for beginners?
Yes. Our classes are beginner friendly. Many people learn both, using the slower Gi classes to build fundamentals.
Will I spar in my first week?
Yes, but very lightly. For the first few weeks beginners roll lightly and spend time watching the higher ranks and how they conduct themselves in class.
Gi vs No-Gi: what's the difference?
Gi BJJ uses grips on the jacket and collar and is slower and more technical. No-Gi has no jacket grips, so it relies on body control and is faster.
