Self Defence Classes Near Fitzroy

Ongoing, practical self defence for every age, a short trip up High St

Self defence for life in the inner north

Fitzroy is one of Melbourne’s liveliest suburbs: late nights on Brunswick St, crowded trams, busy footpaths on Smith St. Our self defence classes near Fitzroy prepare you for the moments when that energy turns into trouble, with simple techniques you practise every week until they’re automatic.

The dojo is about six and a half kilometres north, up High St and along Dundas St, with parking at the door. Adults can train seven times a week, and there are classes for kids and teens too.

What you’ll learn

  • Awareness and de-escalation: reading a situation early and talking your way out.
  • Releases: escaping wrist grabs, clothing grabs, chokes, headlocks and bear hugs.
  • Striking: a few strikes that work under stress.
  • Ground escapes: getting up safely if you’re knocked down.
  • Knife Defence: trained one month in every four, with training knives.

Self defence classes, courses or workshops?

Plenty of people in Fitzroy search for a self defence course and find one-off workshops. They’re a good introduction, but a skill practised once is forgotten within weeks. Weekly classes let you build on each lesson, test it with a resisting partner and keep it sharp. You can join any week and train as often as suits you.

For women in Fitzroy

Many of our Fitzroy students are women who want to feel safer walking home or travelling late. You train in our regular adult classes with partners of all sizes, which is how you find out what really works. More on our women’s self defence classes.

Kids and teens

Children from Fitzroy Primary and Sacred Heart learn awareness and escapes in Ninja Stars and Samurai Warriors; teens train in Junior Adults, including Knife Defence basics. See kids self defence.

A Fitzroy night out, rehearsed

Many of our Fitzroy students first came after a scary moment: being followed from Brunswick St to their front door, a drunk stranger who wouldn’t let go of their arm, or a fight breaking out on the 86 tram. In class we rebuild those moments safely and work out better options together, from where to stand and what to say, to how to break free and get to a crowded place. Turning a bad memory into a practised plan is one of the most empowering parts of training.

As someone totally new to martial arts, I’ve felt nothing but welcomed … as a short, small framed woman, it gives me some sense of empowerment I’ve never had before. Recommend for girls/ women of any age, and any experience.
