Teens Martial Arts

Young Adults Martial Arts

For 15, 16 and 17 year olds: the full adult curriculum and belt system, training alongside other teens.

Teenagers training self defence at Guest’s Martial Arts, Thornbury

Young Adults is the name for our 16 and 17 year olds. From 16, teenagers train in our adult classes and learn the full adult curriculum. But they aren’t thrown in with adults: teens are partnered with other teenagers, usually of a similar age and the same gender. A 16 year old girl will usually train with other 16 year old girls; 16 and 17 year old boys train with each other. They only rarely partner an adult.

So your teen gets the real adult syllabus, the adult belt system and the 90 minute adult classes, while still training with people their own age.

What Young Adults Learn

  • The complete adult self defence syllabus: strikes, escapes, joint locks, throws, restraints and ground skills.
  • Full knife defence: part of our regular training rotation.
  • Weapons: the full adult weapons curriculum, including bo staff and sword.
  • Awareness and avoidance for the situations older teens actually face: parties, public transport and getting home safely.

A Real Path to Black Belt

Everyone 16 and over grades on the adult belt system, so teens are working towards a full adult black belt, which can be awarded from 18. There are no special teen-only classes: teens can come to any adult class on the timetable, morning, evening or Saturday, which makes it easy to fit training around school, sport and part-time work.

I started training at Guest Martial Arts at the age of thirteen in the mid-2000's. I met phenomenal students and teachers who have turned into life-long friends. They taught me patience, kindness and an awareness of the positive effect you can have on others.

Enrolling her at this school has been hands down the best thing we as parents have done for our daughter. GMA is a positive environment for young people delivering a consistent and overwhelming positive message in a sometimes negative world.
