Practical self defence close to Northcote
Northcote has a busy nightlife along High St, plenty of late trains and trams, and a lot of people walking home after dark. Our self defence classes give you the skills and the confidence to handle that safely, taught every week at our dojo just north of Northcote, at 272 Dundas St.
This isn’t a weekend seminar. You train the same techniques again and again, against a partner who resists, until you can rely on them when you’re tired, startled or under pressure.

For Northcote kids and teenagers
Our kids classes teach children to stay aware, use a strong voice, walk away from trouble and escape a grab, in a way that’s fun rather than frightening. Classes start at 4:15pm, a straightforward trip after school from Northcote Primary, Westgarth Primary and St Joseph’s. Teens from Northcote High School and Santa Maria College join Junior Adults (11 to 15), our most self-defence-focused programme, which includes Knife Defence basics. More on kids self defence.
Women’s self defence for Northcote
Women train in our regular adult classes, alongside men and other women, so you can start any week rather than wait for a course. Size and strength matter less than leverage and timing, and almost everyone starts as a beginner. See our women’s self defence classes.
After a night out on High St
Northcote’s bars, live music venues and late trams on High St are a big part of living here. Most nights end without any trouble, but our students like knowing how to handle the rare one that doesn’t: reading body language early, keeping a safe distance, calmly talking someone down, and if it comes to it, breaking a grab and getting away to a busy, well-lit spot. These are the scenarios we rehearse in class, so the response comes naturally.

Amazing culture here and a very practical martial art. I've done martial arts for over 20 years and have struggled to find a club that balances humour, practicality, realistic techniques and education as well as this place.
— Andrew D.
This is an excellent place to learn martial arts. There's a seamless blend of respect for tradition and practical, effective, Self Defence. All in the most inclusive and welcoming environment you could ask for.
— Stu T.
This is a complete system for anyone wanting to learn not only physical defense, traditional weaponry, and modern day concepts, but also a balance of mental development for a pressured situation.
— Andrew S.
Great family friendly dojo. Very unique martial arts if you’re interested in practical defence techniques - boxing is great for fitness also.
— Sean M.
As someone totally new to martial arts, I’ve felt nothing but welcomed … as a short, small framed woman, it gives me some sense of empowerment I’ve never had before. Recommend for girls/ women of any age, and any experience.
— Ash D.
