Self Defence Classes near Heidelberg

Morning, evening and Saturday classes, about 3.5 km from Heidelberg

Self defence drill in a class near Heidelberg

Self defence on your schedule

Whether you work days, nights or rotating shifts, our self defence classes near Heidelberg are easy to fit in. Adults have seven classes a week, including mornings, and the dojo is about ten minutes west along Banksia St and Bell St.

You’ll learn to recognise trouble early, escape grabs and holds, strike effectively and defend against weapons, all practised with partners until it feels natural.

Built for people who work odd hours

Many of our Heidelberg students work at the Austin or Mercy hospitals, in hospitality or in security, and some have dealt with aggressive people at work. Our training covers verbal de-escalation, keeping a safe distance and controlling someone without hurting them, as well as escapes and strikes for when you have no choice.

What a session covers

  1. A warm-up focused on movement and falling safely.
  2. A technique of the week, such as escaping a choke or breaking a wrist grab.
  3. Partner drills that add resistance step by step.
  4. Scenario practice, putting it together under light pressure.

Kids, teens and women

Children learn age-appropriate self defence in Ninja Stars and Samurai Warriors; teenagers train in Junior Adults. Women train in our regular adult classes; see women’s self defence and kids self defence.

Staying calm when it counts

Under stress your heart races, your vision narrows and fine motor skills disappear. That’s why we keep techniques simple and practise them with rising pressure, so your body knows what to do even when your mind is flooded. Heidelberg students tell us the biggest change is how calm they feel in tense moments, whether it’s an agitated patient on a ward or a stranger who won’t take no for an answer.

Great family friendly dojo. Very unique martial arts if you’re interested in practical defence techniques - boxing is great for fitness also.

As someone totally new to martial arts, I’ve felt nothing but welcomed … as a short, small framed woman, it gives me some sense of empowerment I’ve never had before. Recommend for girls/ women of any age, and any experience.

I've been training in Japanese Jiu Jitsu and attending Adult Kickboxing classes for the last 3 years and I learn something new and valuable from the staff every time I go there. I would highly recommend this school to anyone wanting to start training in martial arts as an adult…

Amazing culture here and a very practical martial art. I've done martial arts for over 20 years and have struggled to find a club that balances humour, practicality, realistic techniques and education as well as this place.
