Self Defence near Heidelberg Heights

Real-World Self Defence for Heidelberg Heights

Skills you keep, just across Darebin Creek from Heidelberg Heights

Knife defence pressure test in a self defence class near Heidelberg Heights

A short hop along Bell St

From Heidelberg Heights, the dojo is about as easy as it gets: Bell St west, over Darebin Creek, and left into Chifley Drive. That matters, because the best self defence training is the kind that’s close enough to keep doing.

A one-day course can give you a few moves to remember. Weekly training gives you skills you keep. We’ve taught real-world self defence since 1997, to complete beginners and to students who have stayed for decades.

What you’ll learn

  • Awareness and avoidance: spotting trouble early and staying out of it.
  • Escapes: getting free from grabs, holds and headlocks.
  • Striking and grappling: for the times you can’t walk away.
  • Knife Defence: realistic, safe training for teens and adults.

Morning classes for shift workers

Not everyone in Heidelberg Heights works nine to five. If you work shifts at the Austin or start early, our 9:30am classes on Tuesday and Thursday sit alongside evening classes Monday to Thursday and a Saturday class at 12:45pm.

Children and teens

Through Ninja Stars and Samurai Warriors, children cover bullying, stranger safety and a strong voice. Older students join Junior Adults (11 to 15). Bell St makes after-school classes a quick trip for families at Heidelberg Primary and nearby schools.

Starting as a woman or a complete beginner

You don’t need to be big, strong or fit. Women train in our regular adult classes, with technique that depends on leverage and timing. See self defence for women.

From Heidelberg Heights to the dojo

Get onto Bell St, using Waterdale Rd if you’re coming from further south, and head west across the Darebin Creek bridge. Turn left into Chifley Drive, which brings you to the dojo at Dundas St.

If you ride or walk, the Darebin Creek Trail leads to the Dundas Street Wetlands beside us.

What our students and parents say

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Google Review
I've been training in Japanese Jiu Jitsu and attending Adult Kickboxing classes for the last 3 years and I learn something new and valuable from the staff every time I go there. I would highly recommend this school to anyone wanting to start training in martial arts as an adult…

Amazing culture here and a very practical martial art. I've done martial arts for over 20 years and have struggled to find a club that balances humour, practicality, realistic techniques and education as well as this place.
