Many people searching for a self defence course in Bundoora expect a one-day workshop. Workshops are a useful taste, but skills fade fast if you don’t practise. Our classes run every week, all year, so you build real reflexes over time, and you can start any week rather than waiting for a course date.
For La Trobe and RMIT students
Walking across a dark campus car park or catching a late tram on Plenty Rd is part of uni life. Students train in our 90-minute adult classes, including 9:30am sessions on Tuesday and Thursday, and learn awareness, escapes and Knife Defence. See women’s self defence for more on training as a woman.
Self defence for every age
Kids learn awareness, using their voice and escaping grabs in Ninja Stars and Samurai Warriors. Teens from Bundoora Secondary College and Parade College train in Junior Adults, including Knife Defence basics. More on kids self defence.
Starting out: your first few weeks
Your first class covers stance, distance and the most common grab escapes. Over the next few weeks you add strikes, choke and bear-hug escapes, and how to get back to your feet if you end up on the ground. Instructors pair you with experienced students who know how to help a beginner, and you can repeat any class as often as you like. By the end of the free trial most Bundoora students are surprised how much they’ve already picked up.

Had an awesome experience. Craig is super skilled, patient, and really know how to push you while keeping it fun. Everyone’s welcoming, and the training is really inviting for a beginner.

Amazing culture here and a very practical martial art. I've done martial arts for over 20 years and have struggled to find a club that balances humour, practicality, realistic techniques and education as well as this place.
— Andrew D.
This is an excellent place to learn martial arts. There's a seamless blend of respect for tradition and practical, effective, Self Defence. All in the most inclusive and welcoming environment you could ask for.
— Stu T.
This is a complete system for anyone wanting to learn not only physical defense, traditional weaponry, and modern day concepts, but also a balance of mental development for a pressured situation.
— Andrew S.
Great family friendly dojo. Very unique martial arts if you’re interested in practical defence techniques - boxing is great for fitness also.
