Brunswick’s nearest full-time dojo, just east

Brunswick families looking for martial arts have a full-time school a short drive east. All Guest’s Martial Arts classes now run from our 700m² dojo at the eastern end of Dundas St, Thornbury, about seven kilometres from Sydney Rd, with parking at the door and more than 50 classes a week.

Since 1997 we’ve taught kids, teenagers and adults a practical mix of karate-style striking, throws, locks, escapes and weapons, with self defence at the heart of every class.

Kids martial arts for Brunswick schools

Children from Brunswick Primary, Brunswick North Primary, Brunswick South West Primary and the local Catholic schools train in our age-grouped classes after school and on Saturday mornings. Ninja Stars (4½ to 7) builds coordination and listening through games, and Samurai Warriors (8 to 10) teaches proper technique, fitness and self defence. Every class includes a Kids Life Skills lesson.

Teens and Brunswick Secondary College students

Teenagers train in Junior Adults (11 to 15), a class focused on real self defence, including Knife Defence basics, with a clear belt path and instructors who expect, and give, respect.

Karate, or something more practical?

Brunswick parents searching for karate often find our classes cover more ground: the punches, kicks and blocks of karate, plus how to escape grabs, fall safely, throw and control an attacker. There are no grading fees, and belts are earned in class when students are ready.

Adults from Brunswick

Adults choose from 90-minute Adults Martial Arts classes (weeknights at 7:15pm, Tuesday and Thursday at 9:30am, Saturday at 12:45pm), beginner-friendly BJJ, and 45-minute Fitness Kickboxing. Plenty of Brunswick creatives, students and hospitality workers use the daytime classes.

Parking, space and a full timetable

Finding a park near Sydney Rd or Lygon St can take longer than the drive to Thornbury. At our dojo you park near the door and step straight onto 700m² of mats. With classes six days a week, missing a session is easy to make up.

From Brunswick to the dojo

The simplest route is north to Bell St, then east through Coburg and Preston and right into Chifley Drive, which brings you to Dundas St. From southern Brunswick, you can also cross Merri Creek to High St, head north to the Plenty Rd junction and turn right into Dundas St.

On public transport, use the PTV journey planner: the dojo is about a 10-minute walk from the nearest bus 552 stop on Dundas St.

My young son has been attending Guests Martial Arts for over three years, and it's really helped him with agility and coordination, and increased confidence in his physical abilities. … Lessons include discussions about things like friendships, positive social behaviour, sensible risk taking, and there are also reward programs for reading and good manners.
