Self Defence near Brunswick

Self Defence Classes near Brunswick

Weekly, practical self defence at our Thornbury dojo

Students practising a self defence technique, for classes near Brunswick

Self defence for Brunswick, practised every week

Our self defence classes for Brunswick students run at our full-time dojo in Thornbury, about seven kilometres east. Adults have seven classes a week, mornings, evenings and Saturday, so it’s easy to train often enough for the skills to stick.

You’ll learn to read situations early, break free from grabs and holds, strike when you must, get up from the ground and defend against a knife, practising with partners who give realistic resistance.

Real situations from Sydney Rd to Lygon St

Brunswick students tell us about crowded trams on Sydney Rd, late walks home from Brunswick or Jewell station, and busy nights on Lygon St. We train for those moments: spotting trouble early, keeping distance, using your voice, and if needed, escaping a grab or headlock and getting to a safe, busy place.

Women’s self defence

Women train in our regular adult classes, with partners of all sizes, which is the most honest way to learn what works. Most start as complete beginners. See our women’s self defence classes.

Kids and teens

Children learn awareness, a strong voice and how to escape grabs in Ninja Stars and Samurai Warriors. Teens train in Junior Adults, including Knife Defence basics. More on kids self defence.

Riding the Upfield path or Merri Creek Trail?

Brunswick is a cycling suburb. We practise what to do if you’re stopped or grabbed on a quiet path: protecting your head, creating space, using the bike as a barrier and getting away. It’s the kind of practical detail one-off workshops rarely cover.

Getting here from Brunswick

Head north to Bell St and drive east through Coburg and Preston, then turn right into Chifley Drive to Dundas St. Or cross Merri Creek to High St, go north to the Plenty Rd junction and turn right into Dundas St. Parking is by the door.

I've been training in Japanese Jiu Jitsu and attending Adult Kickboxing classes for the last 3 years and I learn something new and valuable from the staff every time I go there. I would highly recommend this school to anyone wanting to start training in martial arts as an adult…

Amazing culture here and a very practical martial art. I've done martial arts for over 20 years and have struggled to find a club that balances humour, practicality, realistic techniques and education as well as this place.
