Knife defence and more, for Coburg North

Knife crime has been in the news across Melbourne, and many Coburg North parents and adults ask us how to stay safe. Our self defence classes cover it properly: adults spend one month in every four on Knife Defence, and teenagers learn the basics in Junior Adults, along with awareness, escapes and striking.

The dojo is about seven kilometres east along Bell St, with parking at the door and classes every day except Sunday.

How we teach Knife Defence

We start with the most important lesson: if someone wants your wallet or phone, give it to them and leave. When escape isn’t possible, you learn to control the weapon arm, create distance and get away, using training knives and building speed and pressure gradually. It’s serious material taught in a safe, supportive way. Read more about our Knife Defence training.

Self defence for Coburg North families

Kids from Coburg North Primary learn age-appropriate self defence in Ninja Stars and Samurai Warriors. Teens train in Junior Adults, and women train in our regular adult classes; see women’s self defence.

On the Upfield Bike Path at night?

Plenty of Coburg North locals ride or walk the Upfield Bike Path and Merri Creek Trail. We train realistic scenarios such as being grabbed from behind or blocked on a narrow path, so you know how to break free and get to a busy, well-lit place.

Teens and knife crime

Coburg North parents with teenagers are understandably worried about knives. In Junior Adults, teens learn to recognise warning signs, avoid groups looking for trouble, and walk away. They also practise basic defences with training knives, so if the worst happens they have a plan instead of freezing. Most importantly, they learn that their safety matters more than their phone, shoes or pride.

Great family friendly dojo. Very unique martial arts if you’re interested in practical defence techniques - boxing is great for fitness also.

As someone totally new to martial arts, I’ve felt nothing but welcomed … as a short, small framed woman, it gives me some sense of empowerment I’ve never had before. Recommend for girls/ women of any age, and any experience.

I've been training in Japanese Jiu Jitsu and attending Adult Kickboxing classes for the last 3 years and I learn something new and valuable from the staff every time I go there. I would highly recommend this school to anyone wanting to start training in martial arts as an adult…

Amazing culture here and a very practical martial art. I've done martial arts for over 20 years and have struggled to find a club that balances humour, practicality, realistic techniques and education as well as this place.
