Martial Arts for Fitzroy North
Kids, teens and adults · straight up High St from Fitzroy North

Worth the trip up High St
Fitzroy North has plenty of yoga studios and gyms but very few full-time martial arts schools. Ours is about five kilometres north: up High St through Northcote, then along Dundas St to its eastern end. With parking at the door, it’s often easier than finding a park near Edinburgh Gardens.
Since 1997 we’ve taught martial arts and self defence to kids, teenagers and adults, in a 700m² dojo with more than 50 classes a week.

Families from Fitzroy North Primary and Merri Creek Primary bring their kids to our age-grouped classes after school and on Saturday mornings. Ninja Stars (4½ to 7) and Samurai Warriors (8 to 10) teach strikes, blocks, escapes and safe falling, and our Kids Life Skills lessons cover confidence, respect and dealing with bullies.
Teens from Fitzroy High
Teenagers train in Junior Adults (11 to 15), a class built around real self defence, including Knife Defence basics, with a structured belt path and plenty of fitness. It’s a great outlet for teens who don’t love team sport but still want something physical and challenging.
Adults: more than a workout
Adults can train Adults Martial Arts (striking, throws, locks, weapons and Knife Defence), BJJ, or 45-minute Fitness Kickboxing. Daytime classes on Tuesday and Thursday suit freelancers and people working from home.
Why not somewhere closer?
Fitzroy North parents sometimes try smaller classes in church halls first. What brings them to us is consistency: the same experienced instructors every week, a dedicated matted dojo, a clear curriculum and classes six days a week. If your child misses a Tuesday, they can simply come on Wednesday or Saturday instead.

My 2 youngest children attend twice a week and have a ball, not only do they learn a martial art, but their confidence has gone through the roof, they are doing hand stands, cart wheels and rolling confidently.
